Richard Witikani was born in January 1967 in Wedza, Zimbabwe. He completed his secondary education at St Vincent's School, Nora. He studied at the BAT Workshop from 1988 to 1989, after which he became an art teacher at Girls High School, Harare, and later, a full-time artist.

Richard has been part of numerous art exhibitions in Zimbabwe and around the world, becoming a well- known master in figure drawing and painting. He also works with lithography, screen printing, ceramics and sculpture. Richard has participated in art residencies in Zimbabwe, Holland, Germany and South Africa.

Richard’s Statement on the Exhibition and workshop:

I was moved by the way these women were working. They would do their everyday work of looking after their family, cooking their breakfast for the kids who are going to school and then doing everything they do at home as mothers. Then they would engage themselves in their new occupation, driving these tricycles on these bumpy roads; making some money for their family...

I was really moved by how tough and hardworking the women are... That's why I decided to do these paintings, in honour of them.
