For many rural women, days are busy.

Women make up 85% of the continent’s agricultural smallholders (SAIIA, 2020). However, they are excluded from the few sources of rural transport.  Distances to access to water, energy, fuel wood and transportation overburdens rural women, constrain their time, their mobility, and therefore limit their access to resources, markets and services, de facto limiting their productivity.

By providing affordable, efficient and reliable shared transport solutions, Mobility for Africa fund aims to power change and to:

  • Empower women in Africa with transport that can help them save time;

  • Better sell their goods at the market;

  • Take their children to the clinic and school;

  • Collect water;

  • Improve their freedom to economic opportunities within households and local communities;

  • Contribute to improving the quality of life of women;

  • Contribute to expanding renewable energy for transport and other productive uses to ensure longer-term sustainability and mitigate climate change.

With the means to undertake more efficient journeys, women can literally become ‘drivers’ of development.

Sponsor Hamba rental for a women’s group.

Utilising our community engagement team we realise women already working on a business venture (like horticulture) or encourage groups to collaborate on one during our application process.

Transport increases productivity allowing women to transport inputs to their business, take products to their local market as well as alleviate time spent travelling to carry out domestic and reproductive tasks.
